Residents and young people from Burgersdorp held a peaceful march on Monday, 27 January 2026, to raise concerns about jobs and training opportunities at the local Correctional Services facility, as seen on this video.
The group marched through the town and handed over a written memorandum to officials from the Department of Correctional Services. The memorandum was addressed to local, regional and national leadership.
Community members say local youth are being left out of employment and training opportunities at the facility, despite it being based in their town.
They are calling for fair access to jobs and skills development so that young people in Burgersdorp can benefit directly from opportunities in their own community.
